Recognizing & Conserving a Central Maine Treasure
Friends of Unity Wetlands incorporated in 2004 with an ambitious mission to sustain the wild and working landscape of the Unity Wetlands region in Central Maine. Extending across Waldo and Kennebec Counties, these 45,000 acres hold a unique and significant resource, a combination of farms, forests and wetlands that are rich in wildlife, scenic beauty, and economic value, all of which – together – enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors.
The Friends of Unity Wetlands (FUW) recognizes that this precious
resource is at risk. Through land and water conservation, outreach and education, we are working to ensure the Unity Wetlands remain for the enjoyment of future generations. We offer an ongoing series of educational activities and outdoor adventure for all ages from our Wetlands Education Center. As a land trust, we help landowners conserve their lands with technical assistance, conservation easements and stewardship agreements.
Though young, Friends of Unity Wetlands is rapidly maturing into an effective advocate for the Unity Wetlands’ landscape. In 2008, we will approach 2,000 acres of lands forever conserved through easements and acquisition. In addition, we are the local stewards for the more
than 1,000 acres of Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge lands in Benton, Unity and Troy.
In 2008, we are excited to announce the award of a $100,000 Challenge Grant from the Unity Foundation. Meeting this tremendous fund-raising opportunity will allow the Friends to continue to conserve the farms and forests, wetlands and waterways that make the Unity Wetlands region so special.
