Mission Statement:
Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) is building a global network of local partners working toward environmental, economic and social sustainability. SHI facilitates long-term collaboration among trained local staff, farmers and communities to implement sustainable land-use practices that alleviate poverty by restoring ecological stability.
Organization Overview:
Florence Reed, a Returned Peace Corp Volunteer, founded Sustainable Harvest International on the vision of helping poor farmers protect the environment and lift their families out of poverty by creating sustainable farms. Since 1997, SHI has expanded its reach from one program in Honduras to include programs in Panama, Belize and Nicaragua. Today, SHI supports more than
1,000 families in their efforts to reclaim degraded land and rise from poverty. Participants have saved 30,000 acres of tropical forest from slash-and-burn destruction by converting 6,000 acres to sustainable uses.
Stressing long-term technical assistance over short-term relief, SHI provides regular training for a period of three to five years. Program participants learn alternatives to slash-and-burn cultivation including sustainable agriculture and agro-forestry techniques, reforestation, organic food production, community banking and marketing tools. The skills learned from SHI's local field trainers allow participants to provide for their families, using the same piece of land each year without needing to clear more forest. We estimate that each acre of land farmed sustainably represents at least five acres of forest that will not be slashed and burned.
SHI's programs are made possible by a growing number of friends around the world. We hope that you will join us.
