LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF MAINE
Improving literacy in Maine one adult at a time.
Our Mission: Literacy Volunteers of Maine is dedicated to providing increased access to literacy services for Maine adults who wish to acquire or improve their literacy skills.
We do this by working to increase capacity in our statewide network, collaborating with other organizations to develop integrated literacy services throughout the state, and by educating policy makers and the general public to increase awareness of literacy issues.
The primary role of the 14 local affiliates located throughout the state is to deliver basic literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instruction using a dedicated corps of well trained volunteer tutors.
For the past 35 years, LV Maine has successfully delivered on its promise to continually provide increased access to literacy services for Maine adults who wish to acquire or improve their literacy skills. However, as the largest non-governmental organization serving adults learners in Maine, we have much great work ahead of us .Here are some statistics to illustrate the challenges and the opportunities ahead of us:
- 150,000 adults in Maine operate at the lowest level of literacy
- 70% of Maine's inmates operate at the lowest level of literacy
- 400,000 adults in Maine would benefit from literacy assistance
- 944 adult learners were served by the Literacy Volunteer Network last year by 1,037 volunteers providing 62,800 hours of their own time, valued at $1.1 million
- A study by McKinsey shows that every $1 spent on Literacy Volunteers delivers $33 of benefit to the community
